In 2019, Sudan’s genocidal, Islamist, and pro-Iranian dictator Omar al-Bashir was deposed after a 30-year reign. During his tenure, Sudan hosted Osama bin Laden and became a major conduit for Tehran to smuggle arms to Hamas. Bashir’s fall gave some hope to the country, which even took steps toward joining the Abraham Accords. Since then, a civil war began between the two generals who cooperated in overthrowing Bashir, and the country has fallen into bloody chaos, as various powers back the rival factions. Emmanuel Navon explains what this means for Israel and the Middle East more broadly:
